Dog Friendly Florida Beaches - St. Pete Beach Area Beaches That Allow Dogs
Everyone needs a getaway every once and a while, even Fido! While it may be a dog-eat-dog world, that doesn’t mean you have to leave everyone’s favorite family member back home while the rest of the gang packs up and heads for a relaxing beach vacation. Finding the perfect getaway for the whole family doesn’t have to be ruff, especially with so many pet-friendly beaches and accommodations in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area. Nothing beats these incredible dog friendly Florida beaches, whether you and your pup are looking to unwind in the warm gulf waters, or dive into a little more adventure.
Fort De Soto Park
Fort De Soto Park is the ultimate dog friendly beach in St. Petersburg, Florida. Dogs have free-reign of the 1,136-acre county park (as long as they are on a 6-foot leash). The world is their oyster to frolic, play and explore one of the South’s Best Dog Parks as voted by Southern Living Magazine. To get to Paw Playground, just take the well-marked exit right before the one that leads to the Fort. The playground is open every day from 7 am to sundown and you’ll find plenty of parking in the Bay Pier parking lot. That’s just the state preserved park, too! We haven’t even gotten into what makes it one of the most pet friendly Florida beaches. Dogs have the run of their own private beach that’s fenced into the playground. There are even different areas for big dogs and small dogs to splash around in the sunshine off their leash in a completely safe environment. You’ll even find special showers to keep your pup nice and clean, as well as a special doggy –height water fountain to keep them cooled off even in all that Florida sun.
The amenities for people are pretty top notch too! There are plenty of nature trails to explore, as well as playgrounds. If you start to get a hungry after all that running around with your dog, there are concession stands as well as picnic areas to enjoy a little siesta from all the fun.
Fort De Soto Park is a short 15 minute drive from TradeWinds Island Resorts on St. Pete Beach.
Honeymoon Island State Park
When it comes to dog friendly beaches in Florida, you can’t leave Honeymoon Island State Park off the list. Located on a natural barrier island, miles of beautiful beaches, nature trails (and even a nature center!) and plenty of wild life are ready to be explored by both you and Fido. As long as your dog remains on a 6-foot leash, they are free to roam all of the nature trails, pad along the shoreline or enjoy a dip in the beautiful crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Make sure you head to the dog beach located on the southern tip of Honeymoon Island where you’re both sure to meet new puppy pals and take in one stunning view of Caladesi Island. This beach will allow your furry friend the space needed to romp in the waves and start your dog friendly beach vacation off with a splash.
There are plenty of awesome amenities for people as well as pets, including; concession stands, picnic tables, nature trails, a playground and more. Located an hour’s car ride away from St. Pete Beach, Honeymoon Island is a straight shot up US-19 North until you turn left on Curlew road.
Picnic Island Beach Dog Park
Forty five minutes from St. Pete Beach is Picnic Island Beach Dog Park, located in South Tampa just off of Old Tampa Bay. Definitely the smallest of the three mentioned in this article, Picnic Island does have it’s own charm when it comes to keeping your pup entertained. While you can certainly roam the terrain with your dog leashed, there are also leash-free zones where your dog is fenced in and has plenty of room to explore and play. There is even water access within the fence for the ultimate splashing experience. There is a rinsing station and a doggy drinking fountain to make sure your dog stays cool in the Florida heat.
After all of the excitement of exploring a new beach and rolling around in the surf, it’s pretty much guaranteed both you and your pup are going to be pooped. That’s why it’s crucial you get the perfect pet-friendly accommodations to return home to after a good long day of fun-filled activities. Pets are treated like royalty at TradeWinds Island Resorts, and thanks to the incredibly popular Sit. Stay. Play. Pet Package your doggo will get the suite treatment they so greatly deserve.
