THERE’S NO SHORTAGE OF THINGS TO DO IN ST. PETE WITH KIDS
Written June 15, 2017
With St. Pete Beach being one of the most family friendly beaches in the United States, it’s no wonder Trip Advisor named it the 3rd Best Beach in the country. So what keeps families flocking to the Gulf Coast of Florida? Between museums just for kiddos, aquariums, zoos, amusement parks, fishing, sporting events and the best family beach resorts in Florida – there’s no shortage of things to do to keep children engaged and entertained. We’re listing off some of the most fun things to do with kids in St. Pete Beach and St. Petersburg, Florida – some you may think you know, and some might just surprise you!
SUN AND FUN ON ST. PETE BEACH
St. Pete Beach is undisputedly the best beach for families. With a wide expanse of shoreline, plenty of space to spread out and rows upon rows of hooded cabanas; kids can run and play in the surf within eyesight of a shaded home base. Another factor that makes St. Pete Beach so action-packed for kiddos is all of the activities available at TradeWinds Island Resorts!
With 201 Things To Do at TradeWinds, you name how you want to “Just Let Go!” and it’s there at your fingertips! There’s more to do and see than anywhere else on St. Pete Beach. From sunrise to sundown kids can participate in a multitude of watersports, plunge down a giant slide, snack on s’mores, check out the KONK Club and even party with a pirate!
For the kid that’s looking for more thrills, TradeWinds has plenty of exhilarating activities right on the beach and the Gulf of Mexico. Plunging down the 3-story tall High Tide Slide is a must for any beach-goer. With three shoots to choose from, every trip down is different! Another kids’ favorite is the Floating Water Park, consisting of 15,750 square-feet of fun. This aquatic playground is open seasonally and floats right on top of the Gulf. Stand-up paddleboards are available to rent and a great way to get out and explore the shoreline too. Little ones looking for even more adventure can experience a wild ride and hang ten on the inflatable Surf WipeOut.
SOAK UP SOME CULTURE
While we admit, museums may not be the first things that come to mind when brainstorming what to do in St. Petersburg Florida with kids, there are some really cool options in the Tampa Bay area that provide a totally unique experience for kids. Whether your little one is more creative, analytical or tactical, the following museums are sure to excite and inspire them.
GLAZER CHILDREN’S MUSEUM
The Glazer Children’s Museum is a quick 30 minute drive from St. Pete, and definitely an action-packed play place perfect to let your kid explore. From exhibits like Art Smart!, to the Engineer’s Workshop and Gadget Garage, there’s a unique experience for everyone. There’s even a Vet Clinic for little animal-lovers and a theater for the blooming Broadway star!
GREAT EXPLORATIONS CHILDREN’S MUSEUM
Great Explorations Children’s Museum, located near historic Sunken Gardens, is as action-packed as the name implies. No matter your child’s age there’s something for everyone. Little explorers can find adventure in Explorer’s Cove, described as the “central focus of the Museum” and “an interactive getaway for your little one’s imagination”. For the lizard-lovers in the family, Critter Cave is the perfect retreat, allowing visitors to take a sneak peek into the secret lives of reptiles and arachnids. Little aspiring News Anchors can even get in front of the camera in the Live and on the Air: Great News! Exhibit.
EVEN MORE TO SEE IN ST. PETE
For little ones with more singular interests, there are plenty of museums in the St. Petersburg area to supply kids with a little more information about their favorite subject. Little athletes won’t want to miss the Ted Williams Museum and Hitters Hall of Fame located inside of Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays. The artist in the family may enjoy a trip to the Salvador Dali Museum or the Museum of Fine Arts. The growing auto-enthusiast may even enjoy a trip to the Tampa Bay Automobile Museum, where they can see cars from decades ago up close and personal.
Tampa Bay’s sunny climate makes it the perfect place for little explorers to come in contact with their favorite animals year-round! It wouldn’t be complete list of things to do in St. Pete with kids without mention of some of our favorite animal attractions in the area. Between an inspirational journey to Clearwater Marine Aquarium, an exhilarating trip to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and an up-close encounter with tropical fish at RumFish Grill, kids can walk on the wild side.
CLEARWATER MARINE AQUARIUM
Clearwater Marine Aquarium holds a special place in the hearts of dolphin lovers across the country. It’s the home of Hope and many other famous dolphins with incredible stories. Dolphin Tale was inspired by the amazing true story of Winter, rescued from a crab trap in southern Florida and brought to Clearwater Marine Aquarium to recover. Dolphin Tale 2 shares the true story of another young injured dolphin, Hope. The movies were both filmed on location in Clearwater, Florida. Besides their two most famous residents, Clearwater Marine Aquarium is home to plenty of pelicans, otters, sea turtles, sharks and sting rays alike!
BUSCH GARDENS TAMPA BAY
Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is just a quick drive down I-275 from St. Petersburg, and home to wild animals and wild rides alike! Each area of Busch Gardens is named for a different area of Africa, and features animals from that area. Just like the continent, you’ll find the widest array of animals in the Serengeti Plain! From flume rides to rollercoasters, there are plenty of thrills to be found across the park!
There’s truly no animal encounter like the one at RumFish Grill! This restaurant features a 33,500 gallon tank built by Brett Raymer and Wade King, the duo behind the hit Animal Planet television show TANKED! There are also two smaller tanks, one full of tropical ‘juveniles’, the other salt water predators. You can take a behind the scenes tour of all of the incredible tanks from the well-trained Eco Excursion Specialists and even get in the tank and swim with the fish!
CATCH A GAME!
When thinking about St. Petersburg kids activities, catching a game has to be on the list! No matter what time of year it is, some bay area sport is always in season! Tampa Bay is home to many professional and semi-professional sports teams, and fans are die-hard in the area! Don’t miss the opportunity catch the Tampa Bay Lightning NHL team score at Amalie Arena, or the Tampa Bay Rowdies minor league soccer team play at Al Lang Stadium.
